Wandering in the woods – a Visit Woods pilot project V 1.0

Dementia Adventure has delivered a project in partnership with the Woodland Trust and Caring Homes piloting and researching the benefits of people living with dementia in care settings getting out into woodlands.  Three Caring Homes locations based in Essex, East Sussex and Wiltshire took part in this project which enabled a group of people from each home to enjoy a woodland adventure at different locations including woodlands owned by the National Trust and the Forestry Commission.  This pilot project was part of the larger Visit Woods project being run by the Woodland Trust.

Gail Graham, Visit Woods Project Manager says: “The partnership between Visit Woods, Caring Homes and Dementia Adventure is so important in demonstrating that accessing green space can significantly improve the quality of life of people with dementia. This collaboration has demonstrated how vital it is to provide access to the outdoors for all. VisitWoods.org.uk is designed to inspire people to visit their local woods and provides information to enable them to do so more easily. This is crucial for helping people with specific needs ensure they have the confidence to go ahead and enjoy their visit.”

  1. What a fantastic project, everyone looked so happy and stress free…. particularly liked the last film showing a gentleman sat on a throne with two lovely ladies either side. For those with dementia you can imagine all the memories that must have flooded their minds – brilliant !
